Will I be billed for a DMFD ambulance transport?

 

DMFD seeks reimbursement from the patient’s insurance carrier. In the event we do not have your insurance information, you have not signed an approval permitting us to bill your insurance, or there is a remaining balance, the patient is billed.

How much will an ambulance transport cost?

 

Ambulance billing rates are determined by the Department of Health Services (DHS) and can be viewed on the DHS website under Rate Schedule.

The rate of each transportation varies, depending on patient treatments and distance traveled with the patient to the hospital

Do you offer a discount if I pay in full?

 

Arizona Revised Statute 36-2239 D states “…an ambulance service shall not charge, demand or collect any remuneration for any service greater or less than or different from the rate or charge determined and fixed by the department as the rate or charge for that service.”


As such, DMFD in unable to offer a discount for payment in full.

Why are Black Canyon residents now billed for ambulance transport?

 

Black Canyon was incorporated into DMFD in 2017. Consistent with district wide policy, ambulance transport is now billed for Black Canyon.



 

Why isn’t the cost of the ambulance covered by my taxes?

 

Fire response from the Department is covered by taxes but not ambulance transport.

 

DMFD provides ambulance response to all people who may experience a medical emergency within the district, not just residents..

Why was I billed when I have insurance?

 

DMFD requires your signed approval to liaise with your insurer on your behalf. If we were unable to obtain this at the time of service, a Lifetime Signature form will be mailed to you to return.



 

What does ALS and BLS mean?

 

ALS is an abbreviation for Advanced Life Support and generally applies to paramedic level skills and assessments. BLS is an abbreviation for Basic Life Support and generally applies to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level skills and assessment.



 

Who responds on an ambulance?

 

DMFD ambulances are staffed by a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a certified paramedic. 


Fire engines are also dispatched to medical emergencies and staffed by firefighters who are also certified paramedics or EMT’s.
